Surgery

Retinal surgery is sometimes necessary to preserve vision, stabilize the eye, or treat serious retinal conditions that cannot be managed with office-based treatments alone.

Our practice provides comprehensive surgical care using modern techniques and a patient-centered approach, with careful attention to safety, outcomes, and communication.

Dr. Kapur performs retinal surgery at accredited surgical centers and works closely with each patient before and after surgery to ensure appropriate preparation, follow-up, and recovery.

When Retinal Surgery is Recommended

Surgery may be recommended to:

  • Repair retinal detachments or retinal tears

  • Treat vitreous hemorrhage

  • Address macular holes or epiretinal membranes

  • Manage complications of diabetic eye disease

  • Remove scar tissue affecting vision

  • Treat certain intraocular tumors

The decision to proceed with surgery is made after a thorough examination, imaging, and discussion of risks, benefits, and alternatives.

Types of Retinal Surgery We Perform

Common retinal surgical procedures include:

  • Vitrectomy – Removal of the vitreous gel to allow access to the retina

  • Retinal Detachment Repair – Including gas or oil placement when needed

  • Macular Hole Repair

  • Epiretinal Membrane (Macular Pucker) Surgery

  • Complex Diabetic Eye Surgery

Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s diagnosis and overall eye health.

Ocular Tumor Surgery & Proton Beam Therapy

Dr. Kapur has specialized experience in the management of ocular tumors, including surgical procedures required as part of proton beam therapy for eye tumors.

Tumor Location Surgery

Before proton beam radiation can be delivered, small surgical markers (clips) are placed on the outside of the eye to precisely guide treatment. This procedure:

  • Is performed in the operating room

  • Allows for highly accurate targeting of radiation

  • Helps protect surrounding healthy tissue

Proton Beam Therapy

Proton beam therapy is a highly specialized form of radiation treatment used for certain ocular tumors.

It allows for:

  • Precise delivery of radiation to the tumor

  • Reduced exposure to surrounding eye structures

  • Effective tumor control while preserving the eye

Our office coordinates closely with specialized proton therapy centers to ensure seamless care, from initial diagnosis through surgery, radiation treatment, and long-term follow-up.

Our Surgical Philosophy

We believe surgical care should be precise, thoughtful, and individualized. Our goal is to address complex retinal conditions while supporting patients with clear communication, realistic expectations, and attentive follow-up at every stage of care.

If surgery has been recommended or you have questions about a surgical option, we encourage you to discuss them with your provider or contact our office for additional information.
