What is a Retina Specialist?

A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist with advanced fellowship training in the medical and surgical management of retinal and vitreous diseases. Because the retina is vital for clear sight, our specialists use cutting-edge imaging and personalized therapies to treat vision-threatening conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachments.

Your Retina Specialist:

She received her medical degree from Santosh Medical College in Meerut, India, and completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She then pursued advanced fellowship training in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where she gained broad experience in both routine and complex retinal conditions.

Her clinical expertise includes the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, retinal vascular disease, inflammatory eye disease, and other sight-threatening retinal disorders.

In addition to her comprehensive retina practice, Dr. Kapur has specialized experience in ocular oncology and works closely with regional proton beam radiation centers in the Midwest to care for patients with intraocular tumors. She plays an integral role in diagnostic evaluation, surgical clip placement, multidisciplinary coordination, and long-term follow-up for patients undergoing proton beam therapy.

She is known for combining advanced surgical expertise with compassionate care and clear communication, ensuring patients feel informed and confident throughout their treatment journey.

What Your Retina Specialist Looks At:

Your retina is a delicate layer of tissue at the back of your eye that plays a vital role in vision. It captures light and sends visual signals to your brain, allowing you to see clearly, recognize faces, read, and navigate the world around you.

The Retina

The retina functions like the film in a camera — receiving light and converting it into signals that your brain interprets as images. When the retina becomes damaged by disease, aging, or injury, vision can be affected or permanently lost without proper treatment.

The Macula

The macula is the small but powerful central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It allows you to read, drive, recognize faces, and see fine detail. Conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and retinal swelling commonly affect the macula and can gradually reduce vision if left untreated.

While the macula controls central vision, the surrounding retina provides peripheral (side) vision — helping you detect motion and maintain spatial awareness.

Together, these structures work constantly to support both detailed focus and overall visual function.
